Experience Cat Ba’s natural limestone with a guided half-day climbing trip. Whether you are a beginner trying outdoor climbing for the first time or an experienced climber looking for a challenge, our guides will help you find routes suited to your ability and confidence.
Beginners can enjoy top-rope climbing with instruction throughout the session. Experienced climbers interested in lead climbing should let us know when booking.
Morning: 7:30am–12:30pm
Afternoon: 12:30pm–5:30pm
Fisher Valley and Buddha Cave each offer a different climbing experience. Please tell us your preferred location and climbing experience when booking. We will check the group schedule and conditions, then confirm the location before you finalise your booking.
Fisher Valley is a great choice for those who want to experience different climbing styles in one session. The crag offers shorter introductory routes alongside longer, more demanding climbs.
Highlights:
A range of difficulty levels: Easier routes offer a starting point for beginners, while harder lines challenge experienced climbers.
Varied climbing styles: Slabs, vertical faces, cracks, and overhanging sections provide opportunities to practise footwork, balance, and efficient movement.
Longer climbs: Some routes and extensions reach approximately 35–40 metres, offering an endurance challenge for experienced climbers. The routes and heights included in your session depend on your ability and safety considerations.
Room to progress: Start with a shorter climb, then try a longer or more challenging route as your confidence grows.
Choose Fisher Valley if you: Want a variety of routes, enjoy challenges involving height and endurance, or are visiting with a mix of beginners and experienced climbers.
Buddha Cave offers climbing in a limestone cave overlooking Cat Ba Town. Its distinctive rock formations create interesting holds and movements, making it a rewarding place to work on technique.
Highlights:
Climbing on limestone tufas: Raised limestone formations create unusual holds and interesting body positions.
A focus on technique: Shorter routes can still be challenging, offering opportunities to practise route reading, precise footwork, and body positioning.
A shaded setting: The cave provides shade and shelter from direct rain, making it an appealing option on hot days or in changeable weather.
A distinctive atmosphere: Enjoy the natural cave setting as you climb. There is also a Buddhist meditation area inside, so visitors should keep noise low and respect this space.
Choose Buddha Cave if you: Enjoy cave scenery, want to experience climbing on tufas, and prefer working on technique over tackling particularly long routes. Shorter does not necessarily mean easier—your guide will help you find a suitable challenge.
Although Buddha Cave offers shelter, some routes may remain damp or experience seepage after heavy rain. Climbing depends on the conditions on the day.
7:30am / 12:30pm — Meet at our office
Please arrive at Cat Ba Climbing, 120 Núi Ngọc, Cat Ba Town, to meet your guides and prepare for the trip. You will try on climbing shoes and be fitted with a harness and helmet.
Let your guide know about your climbing experience and whether you are interested in top-rope or lead climbing so we can select suitable routes.
8:00am / 1:00pm — Depart for the climbing location
A taxi will take you from our office to the confirmed climbing location. The drive takes approximately 15–20 minutes, depending on the location, followed by a short walk to the cliff.
8:20am / 1:20pm — Safety briefing and climbing preparation
At the cliff, our guides will introduce the equipment, explain the safety procedures, and set up the ropes. You will learn essential climbing commands, how the top-rope system works, and how to position yourself when being lowered.
Beginners will receive an introduction to basic climbing techniques, including using footholds, maintaining balance, and moving efficiently. Your guide will also introduce the figure-eight knot and explain how it connects the climbing rope to your harness.
Climbing session — Learn, practise, and challenge yourself
Start climbing while your guide belays you and offers instructions and encouragement from below. We will recommend routes based on your ability and confidence, beginning with a suitable warm-up and progressing to more challenging climbs when you feel ready.
Take turns climbing, rest between attempts, and enjoy the surroundings. You can repeat a route to practise a difficult move or try another climb to experience different holds and movements. There is no pressure to reach the top—your guide will support you as you build confidence at your own pace.
For those interested in lead climbing, your guide will assess your experience and the conditions before agreeing on suitable routes.
Drinks and fruit are provided during the session. At the end, our guides will retrieve the ropes and equipment before the group heads back.
12:30pm / 5:30pm — Return to the office
